Guiding principles:
“My experience as an HR professional has convinced me that the most important function in an organisation is the recruitment and selection of staff that will enable an organization to meet its objectives. Having had firsthand experience of the damage and devastation caused by employing the wrong person especially in management, has resulted in a desire to work with clients where I will be afforded the opportunity to provide a service that will achieve the above.
“I am often surprised as well as disappointed at the lack of care taken when an engineering recruitment exercise is undertaken. I still subscribe to the old fashioned values when recruiting engineers. Comments from clients that “you (JSM) attract good engineering professionals” reflect the value of applying experience and knowledge in the proper assessment of each candidate. We often attract the same candidates as our competitors, but we only present candidates that are suited to the role- we do not convey batches of CV’s in the hope of hitting the jackpot. Those clients that engage us as partners in their recruitment campaigns have had excellent outcomes, testament to my belief that true engineering recruitment is a value added role when engineering jobs are filled through professional HR consulting services.”
John Masters
Managing Director
TMIEAust; MSAIEE; NHDip(Mngt.)
Background and experience:
John's 25-year electrical engineering career spans a broad range of industries in South Africa and Australia. During his 12-year engineering career with South Africa’s national electricity supply utility (Eskom), John gained extensive engineering and management experience in the power supply industry. In South Africa John also worked on contract to engineering firms where he consulted to manufacturing, mining and mineral processing companies.
Since his arrival in Western Australia in 1998 John has been involved in electrical design, project management and consulting work for various engineering, mining and electrical power supply utilities.
John is able to draw on his professional experience as well as his knowledge and understanding of the targeted industries in Australia and abroad to assist organisations with the selection and placement of quality engineering staff. John has a keen interest in the engineering career and issues that impact on engineering employment.
Guiding principles:
“My engineering career was littered with experiences of frustration and dissatisfaction in dealings with the engineering recruitment industry, both as job seeker and employer. Employers continue to turn to external recruiters to supplement their engineering recruitment function, and I felt there was a need for reliable recruitment services focused on engineering jobs, ones that are both respected by members of the profession and recognised and trusted by the industry that employs them.
The engineers' recruitment industry is largely driven by conflicting interests: employers want access to talent as and when required; candidates are driven by a variety of motives in their search of employment and engineering career opportunities; while recruiters seek to profit by matching the needs of these two parties. In the case of the latter shareholder pressure and dare I say greed encourages tactics that lead to much of the inappropriate and unethical behaviour pervading the engineering recruitment industry.
I believe that attention to detail, sticking with what we know and treating clients and candidates with respect offer the best results for a sustainable engineering recruitment business.”

Guiding principles:
“Being an active listener, combined with old fashioned personal service is the key to success. Too often in today’s world we find ourselves in a faceless electronic world, uncertain whether our concerns are being heard. Actively paying attention and communicating is more than a skill – at JSM Appointments it’s an attitude. You can count on our personal commitment and integrity.”
