Rise in engineering employment and mining jobs.
According to the May 2010 report of The Advantage Job Index, employers appear to have shrugged off April “jitters” with a remarkably strong 5.47% rise in on line job advertisements. It will be the first time in several years that the index is able to report positive growth in all occupations and industries that measured, solid evidence of just how broad our job recovery is.
The report highlights that the sector that provides the most important (and topical) trend is the 10.46% rise in engineering employment and mining job opportunities at a time when the resources sector is strongly objecting to the RSPT and threatening to abandon projects. Clearly those projects in progress are creating plenty of engineering job opportunities in the short to medium term. Prior to the announcement of the Resources Super Profits Tax the resources sector’s greatest concern was skills shortages which threatened delayed to contracts due to a lack of sufficient mining specialists (such as engineering professionals)!
According to the report bodes well for engineering careers in The West where the Advantage Job Index shows WA is the strongest performer on an annualised basis by a country mile but interestingly the much maligned NSW economy sits in second place, a tonic for the besieged State Government who are expected to announce cuts in Payroll Tax in their budget.
The report also reflects on an enormous pick up in advertisements for temporary and contract staff, suggesting there may be caution among employers who are choosing temporary staff over permanent. It may also reflect some skills shortages appearing and lengthening of recruitment process so employers have to take a temporary solution in the meanwhile.
