Changing the public's perception of engineering

15 December 2009

Make It So
Changing the way Australians think and talk about engineering

The world of engineering is a place where specialist creativity and science meet to uplift society as whole. Yet, it is a discipline that often eludes the general public. In an effort to bridge this gap, Engineers Australia recently launched its Make It So initiative, a nation-wide campaign to change the public’s perception of engineering.

“For the last decade the engineering industry in Australia has faced a growing shortage of skilled professionals,” says Engineers Australia's Director Communication Marketing, Jamie Penrose. “Fewer students are studying math and science, university engineering graduate rates have stalled and the profession has one of the worst university completion rates in the country. This comes at a time when demands on infrastructure pose a growing risk to the global economy.”

In response to this problem, Engineers Australia is taking a creative, new approach that draws on their strengths of innovation, problem-solving and teamwork. Make It So, is a hip and fun online campaign that aims to change the way Australians think and talk about engineering. “Our goals are to celebrate engineering, showcase the many ways in which engineers improve our lives, and to promote the profession by developing a common language that everyone can understand,” says Penrose.

Australians are invited to submit their dreams, wishes, and ideas on the Make It So website. The most interesting, valuable, and possible of these ideas will be assigned to teams of engineers who will turn it into reality.

“As recruitment consultants JSM Appointments specialises in the engineering profession, and our daily association with its members gives us what amounts to a backstage pass to the capabilities, achievements and enormous contributions made by these talented men and women,” Says Director of JSM Appointments, John Masters. “Make it So is an excellent initiative that aims to engage a wider audience and showcase the profession. I believe this will ultimately gain better recognition for engineers and attract new talent for the many organisations that offer excellent career opportunities in a broad range of industries.”

Penrose stresses that the key to the success of this campaign is industry support. “We encourage leaders in the engineering profession to become Make It So advocates, not just by volunteering to work on the winning projects, but also by spreading the word about the campaign among teams, colleagues, and networks. We need to encourage each other to tell people about the important work engineers do every day.”

With a mix of news, public relations, competitions and other media and online activities, Make It So aims to get people involved with engineering like never before. The campaign is set to become an engaging and memorable way to showcase how the profession solves problems with creativity, innovation and the application of science.

Engineers Australia welcomes any feedback or support for the Make It So campaign. News, pictures, videos, and opportunities to engage in the campaign are available on its website, www.makeitso.org.au. As they say on the website: The difference between amazing things existing in people's minds and amazing things existing in real life, is engineering and hard work.
