DEEWR index shows decline in demand for Engineers

DEEWR’s Internet Vacancy Index recorded a decrease of 3.8% in demand for engineers for September 2011, with for all eight occupational groups decreasing over the month in WA....

20 October 2011

Each month the Department of Education, Employee and Work Place Relations (DEEWR) publishes an Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) which is based on a count of online vacancies newly lodged on SEEK, My Career, Career One and Australian JobSearch during the month. The data are seasonally adjusted and trended and then indexed against a January 2006 base of 100. Vacancies are coded to occupations based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).

talent torque® presents excerpts of DEEWR’s monthly Vacancy Report with a specific focus on data related to engineering and technical occupations across WA.

The October report highlights an overall IVI decrease of 1.3% in September 2011, the sixth consecutive month of declines. In Western Australia:

  • Vacancies for all eight occupational groups decreased over the month in Western Australia in September 2011, with the strongest decrease in vacancies recorded for Managers (down by 3.3%), followed by Technicians and Trades Workers (2.0%).
  • Over the year to September 2011, Pilbara & Kimberley recorded the strongest increase in vacancies across the country (up by 59.0%). Goldfields & Southern WA also recorded a large increase over the year (38.7%), while Perth recorded a more moderate 14.6% increase.

The Skilled IVI, which is based on the aggregation of Professionals and together with Technicians and Trades Workers decreased in September 2011 (down by 2.4%), with a strong decline being recorded in Engineers (3.8%), while Automotive and Engineering Trades recorded a modest increase (0.9%). Over the year to September 2011, the Skilled IVI has fallen by 3.6%, with the strongest declines being recorded in Construction Trades (down by 23.5%).
