Massive solar projects get green light
23 June 2011
The federal government has committed more than $750 million to build two of the largest solar power stations in the world in Queensland and New South Wales.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson recently announced that Solar Dawn and Moree Solar Farm were selected as the two successful consortiums to build the plants. Solar Dawn will build a 250 megawatt solar thermal gas hybrid power plant near Chinchilla, Queensland, while the Moree Solar Farm consortium, led by BP Solar, will build a 150Mw photovoltaic power plant near Moree, NSW. The Solar Dawn plant will be one of the largest of its type in the world, and 85% of its power generation will be emissions free. The Moree Solar Farm will be twice the size of any photovoltaic plant operating globally today. The Gillard government will contribute $464 million for the Chinchilla, Queensland project, which is worth an estimated 1.2 billion, and $306.5 million towards the $923 million solar farm in Moree.
