New Royal Charter Granted and By-laws Approved
Australia’s Governor-General has granted Engineers Australia’s 2011 Royal Charter and approved Engineers Australia’s 2011 By-laws, having become effective on 26 September 2011.
2 November 2011
National president Merv Lindsay says The new Royal Charter and By-laws modernise the language, improve comprehension and correct legal anomalies that existed in the old documents. “Technologist and Associate members now have full voting rights and we can focus on the challenges of the future.” A requisition was recently received by Engineers Australia in which members sought to declare last year’s ballot for the new Royal Charter and By-laws invalid on the basis of concerns raised over the voting procedures.
Independent legal advice concluded that the substance of the requisition was not something on which the Institution was required to act, and this advice was accepted by Council and the member who submitted the requisition was informed. The advice was also provided to the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet and Government House before the new Royal Charter was granted. Lindsay said that given the level of concern expressed by 37% of the membership [who voted 'No'] at the ballot, Council will be establishing a post ballot committee to seek member feedback and to consider the best way to address their concerns. This is a matter that can now proceed following formal approval of the Royal Charter and By-laws.
