Online Job Advertisements Down for Building and Construction
According to Advantage Professional's July 2010 Job Index, the fall this month was unusually unevenly split, with Building and Construction jobs, a key component of Australia's employment landscape, down 9.47% down. This fall can be directly attributed to the lowering of the first time home owners grant and the series of interest rate rises in 2010. Building and Construction (-9.4%) and Human Resources (-10.42%) are the biggest losers in online job advertisements as the Advantage Job Index records a national drop of 1.3% in July, only the second decrease this year. With a decrease of 4.16% in advertised roles in Queensland, the state was amongst the worst performing in the past month, just ahead of Tasmania (-7.34%).
Human Resources was the worst performing industry, however this follows a strong performance over the past year. A notable decrease in advertisements for recruitment specialists suggests that companies may be slowing down the expansion of their teams until after the election and a more certain economic path is apparent. Despite the negative growth in July, the 12 months since recovery of post-GFC has experienced a 24% increase in job advertisements overall. The biggest decline in July has occurred in temporary and contract roles (-3.7%), compared to fulltime (-0.2%) and part-time (-0.3%). Hiring intention reports are all positive for the next 3-6 months and Advantage doesn't see the market stalling.
